Introduce briefly
Erwin Olaf Springveld, professionally known as Erwin Olaf, was a Dutch photographer born on July 2, 1959, in Hilversum, Netherlands. He gained recognition for his work that straddled the worlds of commercial, art, and fashion photography [2]. Olaf's photography was often daring and provocative, and he was commissioned to photograph advertising campaigns for major international companies such as Levi's, Microsoft, and Nokia [2].
Throughout his career, Erwin Olaf received numerous awards and his work was exhibited worldwide [2]. He studied journalism at the School of Journalism in Utrecht and his photographs have been shown in galleries and museums internationally [2]. Olaf's work encompassed various themes and series, including "Grief," "Rain," and "Royal Blood" [2].
Olaf's artistic practice focused on society's marginalized individuals, including women, people of color, and the LGBTQIA+ community [1]. He was considered the most important Dutch photographer of his generation [1]. Olaf's work was celebrated for its boldness and sometimes controversial approach.
Sadly, Erwin Olaf passed away on September 20, 2023, at the age of 64, due to long-term emphysema, weeks after receiving a lung transplant [2]. He had been diagnosed with emphysema in 1996 and had openly discussed his illness in his self-portrait series "I wish, I am, I will be" [2].
